It is the responsibility of all employees to identify hazards and assess risks as a normal part of day-to-day activities. If they believe that the risk assessments did not adequately address the identification and evaluation of risks and hazards, they should notify their line managers.

You learned that at the core of the health and safety management system is the Hazardous and Effects Management Program (HEMP). This program provides a structured approach to identifying and reducing risks associated with MODEC's activities.

It includes the steps below.

Hazard Identification

• Identify all hazards and their possible effects (i.e. what could go wrong in connection with all activities, designs / facilities or services).

Risk Assessment

• Assess and prioritize the risk (i.e. how likely is it that it will occur; how serious would it be to any combination of personnel, the environment, property, reputation, etc., which represent the highest risks).

Risk Controls

• Set performance standards to help select appropriate levels of control and allow objective measurement and monitoring of the effectiveness of risk control measures;

• Select and/or design and implement appropriate control measures.

Controls Monitoring

• Track implementation and monitor effectiveness of controls;

• Improve the process through review, feedback, audit, etc., and if necessary revisit or modify to ensure continuous improvement.

Also, we talked about MAH and MAE, and the Major Accident Hazard Management Life Cycle Strategy, which is crucial for ensuring safety and minimizing risks in industries that involve hazardous materials, processes, or equipment (like MODEC).

Major Accident Hazard (MAH) Management Life Cycle Strategy is a systematic process that helps organizations to identify, evaluate, manage, and monitor MAHs in their operations. The strategy provides a framework that helps organizations to prevent, mitigate, and respond to incidents that have the potential to cause significant harm.

Jonathan works at MODEC’s maintenance team.

He's a new employee, and hasn't had a chance to attend the Risk Management Awareness Training yet.

In one of his tasks, he needed to perform maintenance on the gas tanks, in which he needed to paint the equipment, some of them in high places.

Jonathan thought he was already prepared to do the work by himself, without first consulting managers or supervisors.

He climbed onto one of the platforms with the paint equipment, when his supervisor appeared and identified some risks.

In the image below, we can see that Jonathan is not using MODEC’s proper safeguards. You can interact with the image to find out what can go wrong, and which safeguard would reduce the risk.
